President Lee Myung-bak says the domestic aerospace industry requires further development.
Speaking at a ceremony Friday for the unveiling of the first domestically developed utility helicopter ¡°Surion,¡± Lee noted that the industry is a high-tech, high-value adding industry that can create many jobs.
The president called for efforts to develop the aerospace industry even further in order to become more technologically independent.
Lee said that the nation¡¯s successful development of an indigenous utility helicopter will help propel the nation into the ranks of advanced aerospace nations. He noted that South Korea ranks seventh in the world in terms of the number of helicopters in its fleet.
The president said the government will foster the defense industry as a new growth engine and will strengthen research and development in the sector.
