The U.S. Defense Department says South Korea is looking to spend one billion U.S. dollars on the purchase of eight U.S. multi-mission helicopters and mine-detection systems.
The MH-60S Knighthawk naval helicopters were developed by Sikorsky, an affiliate of United Technologies Corporation, for maritime search and rescue missions and mine removal.
The Defense Department said South Korea needs the helicopters to better detect and remove mines along major sea routes off its coasts.
The purchase also includes military products manufactured by Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.
