The military will arm soldiers in 2015 with more lethal, next-generation heavy machine guns.
The Defense Acquisition Program Administration said Tuesday that it has selected S&T Corporation, EO System Company and Hanwha as firms it would work with to develop the next-generation guns.
The envisioned guns will be reinforced with laser equipment to help better determine the location of targets and will have a range of around two-thousand meters. Existing heavy machine guns have a range between 15-hundred and 18-hundred meters.
The next-generation guns will be equipped with bullets capable of exploding mid-flight, hurling shrapnel in all directions. The administration says the bullets will be powerful enough to penetrate light vehicles.
