The Ministry of National Defense in South Korea has published a revised edition of its policy guidelines for the development of defense science and technology.
The guidelines include the mid- to long-term policy objectives that will be applied until 2024.
The ministry says the revised guidelines will increase the percentage of the total defense budget spent on research and development from five-point-six percent this year to approximately ten percent by 2020.
In addition, the guidelines will concentrate ministry investments prior to 2014 on technological development, including areas related to surveillance and reconnaissance.
The ministry also aims to have its weapons export industry, currently ranked 18th in the world, crack the top ten by 2024.
The book is revised about every five years in line with relevant laws. Although a revised version was published in 2007, the ministry said the inauguration of the new government has prompted another revision as guidelines on national security, science and technology have changed.
